1960s power cables to be upgraded
AN INVESTMENT of £3.4m will see 12.2km of underground cables in Stockport upgraded.
Electricity North West has begun a project on oil-filled cables with environmentally friendly versions between Hazel Grove and Hawk Green.
The cables take power to around 11,000 homes and the originals were installed in the 1960s.
It is part of a programme of replacements across the north west of England.
There will also be an upgrade for cables that cross under the Macclesfield Canal on Windlehurst Road.
John Pietsch, an operations transmission manager for Electricity North West, said: “We’re proud to be investing more than £3m in the local community to ensure 11,000 customers enjoy a reliable supply of power which we all take for granted every day.
“Power cuts are thankfully rare, but as these cables were first installed in the 1960s it’s vital we upgrade them now so we continue to deliver a service to all our customers across the region.”
Advance notice on any road closures will be given. For more information call 0800 195 4141.
