-

A KIND-HEARTED man from Heald Green who won the top prize in a hospice lottery has donated all the money back to them.

Douglas Appleton, has been playing the St Ann’s Local Lottery for 22 years and has had a few small wins previously before winning the top prize of £2,000.

Mr Appleton has supported the hospice for 35 years since his wife, Joan, passed away there in 1983.

He also volunteered for 15 years with the hospice as a day care driver and on the reception and received a certificate for his long service.

“I was surprised to find out I had won but I knew straight away that I wanted to donate the money back to St Ann’s, as I know how much they depend on the donations to help care for patients.”

Trudi Ogden, lottery manager, said: “St Ann’s has been providing care to hospice patients for almost half a century and can only do so thanks to the kind generosity of local people like Douglas.

“The St Ann’s Local Lottery has been running for more than two decades. Each week, winners of the lottery receive prizes worth £2,500, and our main jackpot each Friday is £2000.” »»For more information, or to join the hospice lottery, please visit www.sah.org.uk/lottery, email the team on lottery@sah.org.uk, or call 0161 498 3642.
