Society first to join smile scheme

-

THE Vernon Building Society has become the first business to sign up for Stockport council’s Smile for a Mile scheme.

A total of 36 schools have already signed up for the campaign, which involves pupils walking, running or jogging an extra mile on top of existing physical activity.

Businesses have now also been encouraged to join in and the Vernon, headquartered on St Petersgate in the town centre, is the first.

Chief executive Steve Fletcher said: “We want to encourage our staff to live a healthier lifestyle and do things differently – that’s why we have become the first business in Stockport to take part.”

“Many colleagues are really embracing the opportunity to be more active, often in creative ways - walking meetings are now becoming commonplace.”

Councillor Tom McGee, cabinet member for health, said: “Brisk, regular walking has a really positive impact on your physical health and mental wellbeing and can improve productivity.

“I’m hoping that the Vernon’s positive experience with this initiative will inspire other businesses to take part.”
