Miracle twins have turned 18
AMUM whose twin boys were not breathing when they were born at home at just 26 weeks has celebrated their 18th birthdays.
Leanne Towers, of Taplow Avenue, Cheadle Hulme, marked the birthday of her two sons, Anthony and Stephen England, with a meal for the whole family last Saturday (October 27).
The 35-year-old, now a mum of four and pregnant with her fifth, was just 16 when she gave birth to the premature babies at her home, then on Moscow Road East, Edgeley, with partner Antony England, mum Yvonne and sister Donna at her side.
She explained: “I woke at about 6.30am and felt like I needed the toilet. When I got there the baby just slipped out. I didn’t have a clue what was happening.”
A terrified Leanne discovered that the body of her first twin, Antony, had been born, leaving his head still inside.
“I was just 16, I didn’t even know that could happen, I was completely panicked,” she said.
“I called for my mum and sister and they got me onto the bed. My partner Antony ran into the room, he was panicking too.
“We rang for a paramedic, my sister put him on speaker and he talked me through it.”
They wrapped little Anthony, who weighed just 2lb 6, in tinfoil to warm him up, and as Leanne’s sister tilted his head back he finally began to breathe on his own.
“He let out this little cry,” Leanne said. “I was so relieved.
“Then I felt like I needed to go to the toilet again.
“The paramedic said ‘that’s just the afterbirth,’ but I said ‘no, I’m having twins.’”
When Leanne’s second boy, Stephen, was born, he too was not breathing. However, by this point medics were on the scene and they managed to get the 2lb 8 tot to breathe.
Now trainee fireman Anthony and apprentice mechanic Stephen are both strapping 18-year-olds and Leanne says ‘you’d never guess they were born early.’
They marked their 18th birthdays surrounded by family and friends at WHERE in Manchester city centre.
“I am extremely proud of them,” their mum added. “I just want them to know that.”
Leanne, who lost a baby boy in 2006, is also mum to seven-year-old Warren and four-year-old Byron, and says she was ‘destined to be a mum.’
“I love kids,” she said. “I love my twinnies, that’s what I call them.”
