Nurse sets up friends group

Stockport Express - - Travel -

A STUDENT nurse has been making a real difference in her community by running dementia sessions to local residents and schools in the area.

The Dementia Friends initiative aims to change the way people act, think and talk about the condition, so everyone gets the care and support they need.

Mum-of-one Gemma Thomas, from Bredbury, became a Dementia Friends champion when her lecturer wanted to make her Chester University campus more dementia-friendly.

Gemma, 35, has done a session in Romiley medical practice and at Werneth High School.

She said: “I did a session with some students who are part of an alternative curriculum scheme. They were really engaged, which was really encouraging. My daughter, Maisie, and her friend Hannah, who are both eight, have even been doing their bit by talking about Dementia Friends at one of their assemblies at Woodley Primary. It was really well received at the assembly and I am hoping to go in to the school and do an information session.” »»Visit dementiafriends. org.uk for more information.
