AVIOLINIST from Cheadle Hulme will be performing in Manchester as part of a special concert.

Jennifer Pike, 24, who lived in Stockport until the age of 16, is one of the artists featured in the Desert Island Discs Classic Favourites concert series.

The music for the concerts has been taken from the most popular classical music choices on the iconic BBC Radio 4 programme, which asks guests to choose eight records they would take with them to a desert island.

They include Jupiter from The Planets by Holst, the Blue Danube Waltz by

Violinist Jennifer Pike Strauss, Nimrod by Elgar, Motzart’s Clarinet Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

Jennifer went to Hursthead Junior School in Cheadle Hulme before winning a place to study at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, and in 2002 she won BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of just 12 – the youngest person ever to do so at the time.

She has been playing the violin since she was five, and says she has always loved it.

“The violin is a very difficult instrument to start with,” she said. “With something like the piano you can take quite a decent sound even at the beginning, but the violin is more difficult to begin with.

“However, I think I was quite happy sawing away enthusiastically.”

At 16 she went to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, then on to Oxford University, and is now based in London.

The Desert Island Discs concert will be performed at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on Sunday, October 5, following a performance in Birmingham the previous day, and Jennifer says she is looking forward to playing in her home city.

“Stockport has a special place in my heart, and my parents still live in Cheadle Hulme, so I always really enjoy coming back,” she said. “I am really excited about the concerts, and I love Desert Island Discs – what could be better than taking a load of music to a desert island?”

Jennifer is also a patron of Stockport homeless charity The Wellspring, a cause she says is close to her heart.

“I have played in their gala concerts in the past and I think it is such an important cause,” she said.

“I love helping in any way I can through playing, and that is one of the great things about music. It is something I am very passionate about.”
