Park slide fall girl’s mum is suing council

Stockport Times East - - BUSINESS - MATTHEW DAVIS

AMUM is suing a council after her daughter fell off a slide and fractured her skull.

Ella Reger was six when she fell from the top of the two-metre high slide at Clarendon Road Park, Hazel Grove, in 2012.

Mum Rebecca Farndell campaigned for parks to be made safe and following legal advice, Stockport council bosses removed play equipment from 16 parks and play areas because they didn’t have safety flooring.

Solicitors acting on behalf of Ms Farndell commissioned an independent report by a specialist consultant in playground safety.

It said Ella was not at fault and claims the council repeatedly ignored a warning to make improvements to both the park and the slide, which was at least 30 years old.

Mum-of-three Rebecca, 32, from Hazel Grove, said: “She fell from the top of a high slide onto the hard floor. She could easily have been dead.

“This report shows council officials were saving pennies and risking our children’s health. It’s not my fault the parks have gone. They should have been maintained and kept safe at all times.”

Rebecca led a campaign to raise £11,800 for a new local park.

A council spokesman said they would not comment due to ongoing legal proceedings.
