I DON’T go to the pictures much but I’m very excited about a new feature film which is about to hit the screens.

It’s a comedy called Charlie’s Plan and it’s an amazing collaboration between professional actors and real people.

It’s a unique comedy based in a community centre and centres around Charlie, who recruits his mates who all have a learning disability, to be in his short film ‘Shipwrecked’.

They face many obstacles from disinterested staff but won’t take no for an answer.

Several professional actors are in the cast, including John Henshaw and Stephanie Bishop, THERE’S more local talent to celebrate, this time in the literary world.

With Blood And Scars is a new novel by local author Bozena Masters, who writes as BE Andre.

It’s set in Old Trafford, Chorlton, Moss Side and Whalley Range and although it’s a mystery, it deals with issues of immigration, including Polish, Irish and Jamaican characters and post-war experiences. who both starred in Ken Loach’s film Looking For Eric, and Corrie’s Robert Maxfield.

Director and producer John McCormack also acts in the film, which was shot over five months last year.

Charlie Gooding plays the lead in the story which is based in the Benchill Community Centre in Wythenshawe.

I’m looking forward to the premier which will be held at Old Trafford in March.

I’ve had a sneak preview and the performances make this film unique and special.

It may well go on to win many awards – but regardless of BAFTAs and Oscars, it’s an amazing project and will bring great benefit to the community.

Obviously it’s fiction but it also gives a great insight into the extremely difficult life in 1944 Poland, a time when snap decisions could mean the difference between life and death.

The book looks at survival against the odds and is a story of courage, hope and goodness. It’s published by PebbleStone and I can recommend it, not just because the Manchester Evening News gets mentioned in the very first sentence.
