PURE 107.8FM Horror dog fire touched many hearts
THE shocking fire at Manchester Dogs’ Home has touched the hearts of many.
For the One Voice team, who have a weekly magazine programme made by people with disabilities on Stockport’s radio station Pure 107.8FM, the bad news was felt all the more keenly as Corinna Clayton from Manchester Dogs’ Home had been a guest on their show a matter of days before the attack.
Producer Paul Holloway explains more…. IF you listen to our show regularly then you may remember Corinna Clayton came in to see us a couple of weeks ago with her beautiful whippet Eddie to talk about Manchester Dogs’ Home.
We had a lovely time with Corinna, she was a great guest with her passion for dogs shining through. Off-air she was warm and friendly, if fact we ended up in fits of giggles.
So it was with total horror that the team here learnt of the suspected arson attack which took the lives of over 60 dogs on Thursday, September 11.
Apart from the suffering of all the dogs caught in the blaze, we know how much this awful act will have affected Corinna and her colleagues – both staff and volunteers.
She told us a little about the process of how dogs are treated when they arrive at Manchester Dogs’ Home. They only put an animal down as an absolute last resort – they work really hard to sort out any behaviour issues which might stop a dog becoming a suitable family pet.
Public reaction to the suspected arson attack on Manchester Dogs’ Home has been phenomenal.
The Manchester Evening News set up a Just Giving page which received well over a million pounds in donations.
If as thought, the fire is confirmed to have been started deliberately, then this will be the second time this year that one of the guests on the show has been a target of an arson attack. Earlier in the year, Lucy Sawdon, from Independent Options, the Hazel Grove charity that supports people with learning disabilities, came in to see us. The sheds on their allotment had been burnt to the ground ruining months of hard work from their disabled clients.
Then, as now, the reactions from people in the community was to rally around and after appeals on Pure 107.8FM and in the Stockport Express, the cash to repair and replace the damaged items was soon raised.
We’ve put a link on our homepage www. pureradio.org.uk to both the podcast including Corinna Clayton’s appearance on One Voice and the Manchester Dogs’ Home fundraising page.
Everybody here at Pure 107.8FM wants to wish everybody involved in the recovery work at Manchester Dogs’ home all the best.
