Josh seals victory
Visitors arrived just before kick-off
Good game sees Vale make Cup progress
Vale of Earn progressed to the next round of the Scottish Cup with a 4-3 win over Bank Street Athletic after an exciting afternoon’s football at Market Park.
With the visitors bizarrely arriving in Crieff just 10 minutes before kick off, already in their kits, the game started at a quick pace.
Vale always looked dangerous, especially with forward Josh Roberts – whose blistering pace and dribbling ability was a constant threat to the visitors.
The home side found themselves a goal down early on when a cross into the box was guided home by an away striker.
The Crieff side did not panic, though, and kept trying to play football.
Vale got their equaliser when Calum Fraser found Aaron Dawson free in the box and he coolly volleyed into an empty net.
Shortly afterwards, Garry Brock’s men got their noses in front when an Aaron Dawson through ball found Josh Roberts free on goal and he made no mistake from close range.
Vale had a few chances towards the end of the half but only had the one goal lead to take into half-time.
In the second half, the visitors bagged an early equaliser with a great long range strike that flew into the bottom corner.
With the game becoming scrappy, Vale managed to forge ahead again when Brian Finlay rolled back the clock to waltz past two defenders and round the keeper before slotting home.
The Bank Street keeper was lucky not to see red as he threw a punch at Finlay in the process of scoring the goal.
Poor defending from the Vale and a cheap foul given away at the edge of the box was duly punished as Bank Street scored direct from the free-kick.
At this point in the game the away side’s discipline had almost totally gone, leaving fans of the home side feeling there could only be one winner.
And, right on cue, up popped that man Josh Roberts to round off a fine afternoon by curling a left-footed shot over the keeper from the edge of the box to seal the Vale victory.
Team: Stevenson, Myles, Ritchie, G Brock, Gilbert, Brown, Dawson, Finlay, R Brock, Fraser and Roberts. Subs: Gunn, Howie, Miller, Gillies and Bremner.
Meanwhile, Vale travelled to Dunblane Thistle for a friendly on Tuesday this week, losing 4-1 in what was described as a good workout for the side.
