Takes 2hrs Makes 15 Preheat the oven to 160°C/ Gas 3. Cream together 125g unsalted butter, 150g caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Beat in 1 egg with a spoonful of plain flour. Beat in a few drops of vanilla extract and 245g plain flour until it forms a dough. Chill until firm enough to roll. Roll out on a floured surface to 5mm thick. Use star-shaped cutters to cut the dough. Press a stick into each one. Put on parchmentlined baking sheets. Bake for 15 mins until golden at the edges. Knead small amounts of sugarpaste in different colours and roll out to 3mm thick. Use the cutters to press out stars. Place the stars on the hot cookies. The heat will stick them in place. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Decorate with sugarpaste shapes, using water to stick them in place.
