Takes 2hrs Makes 15 Pre­heat the oven to 160°C/ Gas 3. Cream to­gether 125g un­salted but­ter, 150g caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Beat in 1 egg with a spoon­ful of plain flour. Beat in a few drops of vanilla ex­tract and 245g plain flour un­til it forms a dough. Chill un­til firm enough to roll. Roll out on a floured sur­face to 5mm thick. Use star-shaped cut­ters to cut the dough. Press a stick into each one. Put on parch­ment­lined bak­ing sheets. Bake for 15 mins un­til golden at the edges. Knead small amounts of sug­arpaste in dif­fer­ent colours and roll out to 3mm thick. Use the cut­ters to press out stars. Place the stars on the hot cook­ies. The heat will stick them in place. Trans­fer to a wire rack to cool. Dec­o­rate with sug­arpaste shapes, us­ing water to stick them in place.
