watch the weather Choose a cool, dry but cloudy day to minimise the risk of streaking. Sun can dry windows too quickly, leaving marks, so pick an overcast day!

Brush OFF dirt Before you start cleaning, sweep away any debris and give the whole window pane a brush down, then you can tackle them with the hard stuff.

don’t overdo it Whether you use a special glass cleaner or hot soapy water, remember not to apply too much. You want to use just enough to wipe the grime away.

shine on Dry the glass with a squeegee, then buff with a ball of scrunched-up newspaper. The ink will give your windows that extra added shine and sparkle.

Banish chemicals Make a solution of 2 tbsp of white vinegar to a small bucket of warm water and use a chamois to apply – it’s cheaper and better than chemicals.

Finishing touches Don’t neglect windowsills and panes – be sure to tackle any mildew that’s grown over time. Once they’re clean, you could give them a lick of paint, too.
