Pyrography tool** Pencil & rubber Plain wooden 10cm tree log slice, 99p each, The Wooden Box Mill Humbrol matt varnish, £1.60, Hobbycraft

1 Switch on the pyrography tool and leave it to heat up. Using a pencil, lightly draw your design onto the surface of a wooden slice. We recommend practising on a scrap piece of paper beforehand until you’re happy with the final design. 2 Once the pyrography tool has heated up, carefully go over your pencil markings on the wood with the tool to burn on the design. Once the wood has cooled down, use a rubber to remove the pencil marks. Apply a layer of varnish to the surface for extra protection if needed. This project makes a lovely stocking filler so why not design a festive motif to suit each member of the family?

Mugs, from £2.50 each; sketched berry side plate, £3.50; Christmas cards, £4 for six, all Sainsbury’s
