‘Trump must be convicted by Senate even if he’s left’
AMERICA is a land of rebirth.
Beginning with our nation’s founding and throughout its history, we have reached crossroads that tested the resolve of our commitment to core principles of liberty, democracy and opportunity.
Today, the United States is at another inflection point.a power-hungry tyrant hijacked a political party and radicalised vulnerable members of our population.
Americans are weary from the last four years of Trumpism, but now is not a time for complacency.we have a chance to begin again and reaffirm our fidelity to justice.
Trump is the harshest symptom of a disease afflicting the United States with increasing severity over the past 30 years.
Poor policy enacted by our nation’s leaders allowed blue-collar jobs to flood out of the country, marginalising workingclass citizens in rural areas.
Economic disempowerment led to social and racial grievance, which has boiled over into white nationalism and domestic terrorism. However, the rise of Trumpism and the damage it has caused presents America with another opportunity to create a more perfect union.
We need to hold Trump and his enablers to account. I worked briefly for Trump, so I am not immune to criticism. I failed to assess his despotic tendencies. However, I withdrew my support long ago and dedicated myself to making amends.
To remain loyal to Trump today is to support the incitement of domestic terrorism on January 6 that caused the deaths of five, and threatens even more violence.
Law enforcement is having to sweep state capitols for improvised explosive devices.that we must remain vigilant against such homegrown threats is unfathomable to me.trump must be convicted by the Senate, even if it means after he leaves office.
The Republicans must reckon with its embrace of a traitorous autocrat.
A fissure has developed between Trump sycophants and those seeking to restore the party to the morality of leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. As was proven in the Georgia run-off elections, the party cannot move forward with such a narrow white, rural, male base of voters.
Many people ask whether I am still a Republican. I certainly have no home in today’s “Trumpublican” party, but I also don’t want to abandon it and watch it devolve into the American Hezbollah. Democrats have a historic opportunity to put the country on a better path. Presidentelect Biden is perfect to meet this moment. He is a progressive but also a pragmatist.
Republican obstructionism has exacerbated income inequality, with the party’s inability to produce healthcare legislation the starkest demonstration of its intellectual vacuousness.
The Biden administration’s initial proposal on a $1.9trillion stimulus package is a giant step in the right direction.
It will finally get America on a path to defeat Covid-19. Subsequently, it addresses long-term issues of unequal opportunity plaguing our society.
Trumpism has been a painful episode for the US. I continue to believe in the greatness of America, but recognise, more than ever we must actively nurture our democracy rather than take it for granted. The path forward is uncertain.
Charting a better future will require courage and imagination. But America is too great an experiment to abandon.
