Sunday 10 The Clangers 6pm, CBeebies

Sunday Herald Life - - TV & RADIO -

JUST in time, The Clangers are back, to show us all how to behave. It was never going to be the wonderful 1970s original, of course, but when it appeared in 2015, the first series of this bright 21st century reboot of the beloved, hand-knitted children’s classic was an absolute joy. Okay, it’s never as truly idiosyncratic as the show the peerless Oliver Postgate made almost 50 years ago, and doesn’t feel quite so DIY. But, overseen by his son, Daniel, so much of the sly, wise old spirit still beats through every frame of the stop-motion. And Michael Palin’s narration is like getting a hug in a big, new, soft wool cardigan. Back for a second series, in this first of 26 daily episodes, Mother Clanger, Major Clanger and the Soup Dragon fall out, then realise they’re being silly, and make friends again. This should be compulsory viewing for every world leader. But as long as there are people out there working to make things like this, there’s hope for humanity.
