Enjoy the party season at a home from home

Sunday Herald Life - - TRAVEL FEATURE -

AS we all know, there’s nobody who throws a Christmas or Hogmanay party like the Scots.

The only downside to holding a festive shindig in your own place though is groggily waking up to a houseful of discarded glasses, half-empty cans, and maybe a few prostrate bodies on the couch.

Perhaps this explains the growing trend in recent years of hiring a lodge, cottage or house elsewhere for the annual festive blowout, or perhaps it is because Scotland has some of the best scenery and value-for-money properties available anywhere in the world at this time of year.

There are stunning self-catering properties the length and breadth of the country that offer not just the ideal party venue, but also the chance to perhaps get away with the family and enjoy a few days together in an idyllic setting, where a crackling log fire might keep you cosy on a crisp morning or a cold, clear Scottish night.

Wilderness Cottages have a fabulous selection of properties on their website with late availability for Christmas and New Year, so you should be able to bag a bargain for almost any size of party, from Charleston House opposite Gairloch Harbour which sleeps ten, to the cosy Old Smiddy in Beauly, which is perfect for a romantic getaway.

Great North Lodges also have a spectacular range of properties situated in and around Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park, such as the large but luxury Drumuillie Grange House near Boat of Garten, the picturesque Salmon Run Lodge in Carrbridge which sleeps up to 6, or the smaller but equally charming Strathspey Cottage, which sleeps just two.

The holiday lodges at Piperdam Golf and Leisure resort are also a firm favourite at this time of year, with a wide range of luxury properties that include full use of the resort’s Leisure Spa facilities.

CELEBRATE: Charleston House at Gairloch Harbour sleeps ten people. ADVERTISING FEATURE
