Monday Timewasters 9pm, ITV2
THE script isn’t perfect, but this six-part time travel sitcom is just about daft enough to get away with it, and there’s a smart central idea trying to get out. Written by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, our inadvertent heroes are a struggling South London jazz quartet – Nick (Taylor), Horace (Samson Kayo), Lauren (Adelayo Adedayo) and Jason (Kadiff Kirwan) – who, for no particular reason, discover the lift in a run down tower block is actually a time machine, and travel to 1920s London, where they get stranded. There are too many jokes about the unavailability of Facebook or mobile phone reception, but Taylor is sharper with gags about British racism then and now, as, to begin, the band find themselves the only black faces in a Downton Abbey landscape. Sadly, one of the most potentially interesting themes – the jazz thing – is largely wasted (when the finally play for a flapper party, they do an unjazzy Outkast cover). But flaws and all, it could be a micro-cult in the making. Episode two follows immediately.
