Let’s have a truly glorious Scotland
ANOTHER “glorious twelfth” passes. Glorious? Not for a grouse flapping for cover, trailing a wing while the sporting “gentleman” boasts his kill over dinner.
Meanwhile, a family in Aleppo is the victim of a tax haven arms dealer who perhaps stashes his loot in Scottish land. Two news items can be connected (‘Scotland must end its absurdly outdated land ownership system’ and ‘Scotland has become a money-laundering factory for world’s criminal gun-runners’, News, August 14).
Social affectation, inhumanity, corruption, greed: how does a fair society deal with such mindsets? Use Brexit as a lever towards independence, EU membership, a Scottish pound, small, accountable local banks devoid of wild speculation and money laundering, alongside sustainable energy, environmental and agricultural policies and the prioritisation of climate change.
Scotland should lead the way towards a society banning nuclear arms, blood sports, tax avoidance and inequality; a country in which honesty, empathy and environmental morality become the accepted model.
