Wales

- Lewis Stuart

Leigh Halfpenny: By his standards missed a sitter and he dropped an easy high ball but played a crucial part in Liam Williams’ try 6 George North: Given how good he is, it is strange how little ball Wales give him. Exposed for Visser’s try as the defence got flat footed 5 Jonathan Davies: Picked a perfect line for a great solo break but could not make it all the way. Was solid the rest of the game 7 Scott Williams: With all the ball his side won would have expected to get more chances, but was mainly confined to defensive duties 5 Liam Williams: Didn’t have to do much for his try but was one of the few Welsh backs to roam around looking for extra work 6 Dan Biggar: Arguably one of Wales’ problems with his unwillingness to spread the ball in attack meaning there was little flair 5 Rhys Webb: Attacking nightmare for Scotland. Nearly scored and caused all sorts of problems but did cost his side a try with a sly shirt tug 8 Rob Evans: Scrummed solidly after a few early issues and was the hardest worker of the Welsh front row in the open 6 Ken Owens: Tackled his heart out with some huge hits but would usually look to get more involved as a ball carrier 6 Tomas Francis: In a game of few scrums was close to irrelevant and it was no real surprise that he was the first to be taken off for a rest 5 Jake Ball: An unglamorous day at the office for a player who does a lot of the donkey work but rarely gets involved in the open 5 Alun Wyn Jones: One massive hit on Jonny Gray exemplified another hardworking afternoon where his leadership and ball carrying were crucial 7 Sam Warburton: Made a thorough nuisance of himself getting into the Scots ruck and winning a few penalties for his efforts 8 Justin Tipuric: Magnificent try-saving tackle on Huw Jones with a turnover to follow a highlight of a superb game despite his dangerous clear-out on Russell 8 Ross Moriarty: The quietest of the back row but made a couple of telling carries and helped slow the Scots ball at the breakdown 6 Substitutes: Luke Charteris – Came on for Jake Ball but his extra weight did little to change the momentum in his side’s favour. Samson Lee – Another early arrival and did a bit more than Francis in the open but again not enough scrums to make a point. Jamie Roberts – Tried to add a bit more physicality to the midfield attack but the Scots defence had the measure of his power. Taulupe Faletau – Carried well but could not find gaps and ended doing little. Scott Baldwin – Did little. Nicky Smith – Needed more time to make a difference. Sam Davies – Cameo showed glimpses of his talent but it was too little too late.
