Alan Grant had been reading books about Roslyn Chapel, pre The Da Vinci Code, and how it has carvings of maize and peyote, built before Columbus had sailed to America.

So he had the idea of that connection between Solomon’s Temple, stonemasons and free

masons and the chapel and had this whole conspiracy worked out which he had Bruce Wayne investigate when he was visiting Scotland.

Eventually it became a standard Batman story with a wee bit of the conspiracy theory in it.
