FM backs EU cit­i­zens

The SNP will use the con­fer­ence to set out their plans to help EU cit­i­zens re­main in Scot­land af­ter Brexit.

In her speech on Tues­day, Ni­cola Stur­geon will com­mit to ex­plor­ing “all op­tions” to se­cure EU cit­i­zens’ sta­tus.

She said yes­ter­day: “As one ex­am­ple, if the UK Gov­ern­ment im­pose charges on EU cit­i­zens forced to ap­ply for set­tled sta­tus, the Scot­tish Gov­ern­ment will en­sure that de­volved pub­lic bod­ies meet th­ese costs for those work­ing in our pub­lic sec­tor.”

It is es­ti­mated about 20,000 EU cit­i­zens work di­rectly for Scot­land’s pub­lic sec­tor, in­clud­ing the NHS.
