Former French first lady Carla BruniSarkozy has credited her husband with “saving her from being an alcoholic”.

The Italian- born singer and model, 49, married Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, the year after he became president, and was the focus of a lot of media attention following their wedding.

She said: “Nicolas saved me from being an alcoholic. He never drinks – can you believe it?

“I love wine and I like champagne a lot, but I don’t drink it when it’s the two of us.

“I’m not opening a bottle for me, because it’s not much fun to drink alone.”

Sarkozy remained in office until 2012, when he lost to Francois Hollande.

Carla has just released her first English-language album, French Touch, which features cover versions of songs ranging from Tammy Wynette’s Stand By Your Man to AC/DC’s Highway To Hell and The Rolling Stones’ Miss You.

The singer also hit back at people who believe she fell for Sarkozy, 62, because of his position of power.

She said: “Those people who think I love him for his power? Power? They don’t understand my psychology at all.”

Before marrying Sarkozy, Carla was romantical ly linked to Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.
