Another monster hit for John Lewis

Sunday Mail (UK) - - News -

Every year it happens… I turn my expression to its most cynical setting (the one usually reserved for listening to husband excuses) and I wait for the John Lewis Christmas ad.

I’m fully prepared for the schmaltz. I’m ready to hate the sentimentality. I’m primed for a rant about dastardly retailers who tug on our heart strings just to sell us stuff.

Then it comes on – and it defeats me. I mean, Moz the Monster…he’s damn adorable. Who wouldn’t want one? And Elbow’s cover of The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers is just so beautiful, I’ll be forced to download it. John Lewis are said to have spent £7million on this year’s offering and I end up believing it was money well spent. Suckered again. Really need more cynicism for Christmas.
