UN agree ceasefire resolution for Syria

- Elaine

The UN Security Council yesterday agreed to demand a 30- day ceasefire across Syria to deliver aid and evacuate the wounded.

Kuwait and Sweden had amended the resolution to get Russian suppor t , dropping a call for fighting to end within 72 hours.

Russia’s UN ambassador Vassi ly Nebenzia had branded that unrealistic.

US ambassador Nikki Haley said: “Today we are going to see if Russia has a conscience.”

There is no set time for the ceasefire to take effect but the resolution demands that it be followed immediately by access for humanitarian convoys and medical teams.

It also calls for all parties to lift the sieges of populated areas including eastern Ghouta, Yarmouk, Foua and Kefraya.

But attacks on the Islamic State and al- Qaeda linked groups will be allowed to continue.

The move came after air st r ikes on rebel- held suburbs of Damascus continued for a seventh day.

Producers of BBC Scotland hit Scot Squad have crossed the Irish Sea in the hope of raising a laugh over one of the most problematic parts of the Brexit negotiations.

Glasgow-based outfit The Comedy Unit, whose credits include Still Game, Burnistoun, Rab C Nesbitt, Gary: Tank Commander and Limmy’s Show, are behind a new comedy series inspired by the mockumentary.

Soft Border Patrol follows a team of hapless of f icers tasked with patrolling the Brexit border between Britain and Ireland once Britain leaves the EU in 2019.

It’s set to air on BBC Northern Ireland on Friday and wil l be v iewable to the rest of the UK on the BBC iPlayer.

Come d y Un i t boss Rab Christie thinks the semiimprovised series will chime with a wider audience.

He said: “People from Scotland have related to Northern Ireland for many years but I don’t think some people in the UK were quite aware of the implications of Brexit for Ireland and Northern Ireland.”
