Millions of Brits will be offered checks at GP surgeries and pharmacies as part of a new war on heart disease. Claire Delaney, 37, of Bolton, explains why it is vital you take the tests...

Millions of people will be offered simple checks at GPs surgeries and pharmacies, as part of an NHS England drive to cut heart disease deaths.

It is hoped the screenings for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and atrial fibrillation will prevent countless heart attacks and strokes – and help reduce pressure on the NHS.

Blood pressure machines will be available in waiting rooms so patients can test themselves, while pharmacies will offer free pin-prick blood tests for cholesterol.

People identified as having the conditions will be offered medication and advice on lifestyle changes to reduce risks.

The scheme will also take steps to ensure that people already diagnosed are on the appropriate medication.

It has been rolled out in 84 of the 209 clinical commissioning groups in England so far and will be available countrywide within two years.
