Conkers bonkers for dogs

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - Pet Talk -

A vet has warned dog owners to be wary of them scoffing conkers as they can be poisonous.

Horse chestnuts contain sterols, alcohols and alkaloids which are toxic compounds, and while the ingestion of one or two is unlikely to cause toxicity, if eaten in big quantities it can cause gastrointestinal upset and neurological damage.

Vet Pete Wedderburn adds: “If your dog likes to devour conkers, you should stop them.”
