US highlights North Korea rising threat
THE threat of a nuclear attack by North Korea is rising, the US said yesterday. But Defence Secretary James Mattis warned it would face a “massive military response”.
Speaking on a visit to South Korea, he said: “North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbours and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programmes.”
North Korea engaged in “outlaw” behaviour and US-South Korean security collaboration had taken on “new urgency”, he added.
Mr Mattis, in Seoul for defence talks, said Washington could not accept a nuclear North Korea.
Last month, leader Kim Jong-un carried out his sixth test, the biggest yet.
