Flyer tipping

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - News -

Junk mail is a curse – leaflets that we do not want promoting products we have no intention of buying.

Putting a sign up forbidding them goes ignored. There is nothing we can do but dump the unwelcome trash into our recycling bin.

George Arkless thought differently. He argued that junk mail poking out of his letterbox posed a security risk as it announced he was away. He told deliverers they did not have permission to walk down his path. When the case ended up in court the judge sided with Mr Arkless.

While that should spur the rest of us into similar action the solution is so much simpler. No rubbish should be allowed into our homes unless we specifically ask for it.

The Government wouldn’t even need a new law. Ministers could tweak an existing one.

Because when rubbish is dumped it becomes litter. And the maximum fine for that is £2,500.
