More bread for a loaf at Christmas
BREAD prices are set to go up this Christmas as the rising cost of wheat on world markets is passed on to supermarkets.
Allied Bakeries, which makes Kingsmill and Allinson’s, warned the rise has tipped the company into a loss over the past year.
Since last autumn, the world price of wheat has surged by a fifth and is currently £139 per tonne.
Alex Waugh, of the National Association of British and Irish Flour Millers, said UK bread wheat prices are up 20 per cent year on year, mainly “because of the decline in value of the pound”.
Meanwhile, Morrisons is the latest store to hike prices for popular spread Nutella, adding 22p to a 1kg jar, now £5.20, and 20p to 750g jar (£4.20). It comes despite a plunge in the cost of hazel nut imports.
