FOUR people were killed when a car being chased by police slammed into their people carrier.

A boy aged one, a woman of 41 and two men aged 35 and 50 died in the VW Touran.

Police say two families, said by locals to be Slovakian, were travelling in the car and three more were hurt. A girl of three is fighting for life and a woman is critically ill.

Iffat Yasmin, first on the horrific scene in Sheffield, went to hospital suffering shock. And a local midwife who tried to save the young tot was also deeply upset. Iqbal Khan,

69, said: “She tried to resuscitate the baby. She is all shaken up now.”

The Touran was about to turn right when it was hit by a VW Golf being pursued by police. Resident Adam Robinson, 24, said it “must have been going fast because of how loud the bang was when it crashed. It sounded like a gun”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has launched a probe, said dash-cam footage confirmed that “a pursuit did take place”.

It came amid more road carnage in the North. A girl of eight died when hit by a car in Monton, Gtr Manchester. A woman of 21 was killed crossing the road when hit by a drink-drive suspect in Middleton, and a cyclist, 17 died in Oldham in a crash with a suspected drink-driver.
