But just a few weeks earlier they had been together at a function in which Ronaldo indicated to the Scot that he felt unloved at Real Madrid.

He felt let down by some of the fans, who had, at times, booed him, despite his goalscorin­g feats for the Spanish giants.

He told Ferguson that the dressing room atmosphere was often strained – unlike the camaraderi­e he felt during his time at Manchester United.

It is no secret that Ferguson, who still has influence within the Old Trafford corridors, would love Ronaldo to return.

He continuall­y insists that United sold him too cheaply – that they should have held out for more than the then record £80m outlay.

Whether boss Jose Mourinho shares the same desire to be reunited with a player with whom he shared an up-and-down relationsh­ip during his time as Real Madrid boss is open to debate.

PSG have indicated they will pay whatever it costs to bring the Portuguese internatio­nal to France, and they are one of the few clubs in Europe with the financial clout to make it happen.

But whatever the outcome in what should prove to be the most intriguing saga of the summer transfer window, Ferguson will certainly be up to speed on any developmen­ts.
