Plot is turned into city haven

-

Paul Doogan has transformed a large piece of land outside his house which is far bigger than his own garden.

His mission was to rejuvenate it to fill it with colour and personality and to provide a haven for wildlife. He wanted to create an area for everyone to enjoy – the idea that is at the heart of our Cultivation Street competition

Paul, from Birmingham, said: “In 2015 I was granted permission from Birmingham City council to garden a piece of their land outside my house.

“It’s 80 square metres and I wanted to do something positive. Around my city it’s depressing how many front gardens are being paved over. This is my way of fighting back.

“People who pass by think it’s beautiful – that gives me a sense of satisfaction. This spring I built a pergola for climbing roses and clematis.”

Paul, 52, added: “All my spare time is taken up by the garden. It’s become a real hobby and has turned into a big part of my life. The hard work is worth it when I look at the stunning results.”

We’ve got £20,000 of National Garden Gift Vouchers to give away for Cultivation Street 2017.

There is £10,000 for the UK’s top community gardening project. Other categories include Classic Cultivation Street, for neighbours with three or more consecutive front gardens, Cultivation School and best small space.
