THOUSANDS rallied for unity in Madrid and Barcelona yesterday and demanded Spanish and Catalan leaders start negotiating.
Campaigners wearing white shirts marched with balloons and banners saying “Shall We Talk?” at simultaneous demos in each capital. They respected requests not to bring flags but at a separate demo in Madrid’s Colon Square, Spanish flags were flown amid some tension.
Catalonia President Carles Puigdemont says he will honour the Yes result in last Sunday’s referendum which saw violence as the Spanish Government cracked down, calling it illegal.
Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy said Catalonia is going nowhere. Crashing out of the EU with no deal means the UK reverting to World Trade Organisation rules. Political Editor
