Bei­jing’s hu­tongs – the 13thC res­i­den­tial quar­ters – have been com­mer­cialised and mod­ernised over re­cent years. The main street is to­day lined with sou­venir shops and lively bars, snack stands, small restau­rants and western cafés – there’s even a Star­bucks! For the 2008 Olympics, China wanted to show­case a mod­ern city, so there was wide-scale ren­o­va­tion. But in an at­tempt to pre­serve a lit­tle au­then­tic­ity and charm they mod­ernised the hu­tongs in­stead of de­mol­ish­ing them.
