The lights on the 65ft Christmas tree in London's Trafalgar Square will be turned on at 6pm on Thursday, marking a 70-year tradition. It was in 1947 that the people of Oslo first donated a yuletide spruce as a token of gratitude for British support to Norway during WW2. This annual gift has provided a central focus for the capital's festive celebrations with carol-singing to raise money for voluntary or charitable organisations. It is taken down for recycling just before Twelfth Night. NT
