Can I put a house plant on a win­dowsill with a ra­di­a­tor un­derneath? Jill, via email. DaVID: Not really, as the rapid heat­ing up and cool­ing down as the ra­di­a­tor comes on and off will cause prob­lems.

It’s best to find a spot where the tem­per­a­ture is con­stant. If in doubt, use a cool, rather than hot, room.
