FRANTIC firefighters tackling a blaze were attacked by yobs who threw wood and stood on hoses to stop the water.

Youngsters also opened the rear doors of fire engines to try to grab life-saving equipment.

It happened as crews were putting out a rubbish blaze in Middlesbrough.

They also tried to start another fire nearby, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.

It follows a string of incidents, one involving up to 40 youths, prompting Cleveland crews to wear body cameras.

Davey Howe, of the Fire Brigades Union, said: “A lot of the attacks are opportunistic by young people and it’s as if it’s almost like a game. They need to realise it stops us doing our job properly.”
