World’s longest flight arrives 19hrs after Singapore take-off
THE world’s longest commercial flight touched down in New York on Friday after almost 19 hours in the air from Singapore.
Singapore Airlines Flight SQ22 left Changi Airport at 23.37 on Thursday and touched down at Newark, which services the Big Apple, at 05.39 the following day.
Before its 15,000km inaugural journey, the airline told passengers the trip could be as short as 17 hours. In the event, it took almost 19. Qantas launched a 17-hour, non-stop service from Perth to London earlier this year, while Qatar runs a 17.5-hour flight between Auckland and Doha. The Singapore-to-New York route will initially run three times a week, departing on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
