Time for Anne’s law

Sunday Mirror - - PUZZLES - BY KAREN ROCKETT

We’re a nation of animal lovers – and three-quarters of us agree big cats, elephants and other animals should not be made to perform in circuses.

But despite decades of campaigning – and promises of change from successive Governments – animals are still being forced to perform for entertainment.

In 2011 – when we revealed the torment of Anne, the elephant abused at the Bobby Roberts Super Circus – backbench MPs’ Private Members’ Bills were thwarted. And legislation drafted in 2013 for a 2015 ban gathered dust.

Only this month two circuses put on shows using wild animals in the UK, according to the Animal Defenders International charity.

Today we’re asking YOU to support its campaign – inspired by Anne – for the UK to join an EU-wide ban on the sick shows.

Jan Creamer, ADI president, said that while 45 countries across Europe and the world have a ban, the UK lags behind.

She said: “Evidence of suffering has prompted authorities and governments around the world to end their use.” Comedian Ricky Gervais, who works with ADI, added: “Using and abusing animals is not what I call entertainment.

“A ban on wild animal circus acts needs to happen without delay, ending this madness once and for all.”

Actress Joanna Lumley said: “Forced to perform, caged and confined, it is haunting and horrifying to see animals being used in circuses.”

Scotland brought in a ban in May. In February the UK Government indicated a ban by January 2020, when temporary rules on circuses with wild animals expire. But campaigners want a full ban.

A YouGov poll out last month for Animal Advocacy and Protection said 76 per cent of UK adults think circuses in Europe shouldn’t be allowed to use wild animals.

CEO David van Gennep said: “Brexit or no Brexit, the UK will remain part of Europe, and Europe clearly rejects a practice which should already be history.”

Bobby Roberts was convicted of animal cruelty and his circus is now closed. Anne now lives in a special enclosure at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire.
