The 34-year-old was back on the bench once Forster returned from injury, but last summer it looked like he finally landed his break when he joined Everton for an undisclosed fee.

He once again started the season as the Toffees’ number one but by the end of the season had lost his place to Joel Robles.

Everton have since signed Jordan Pickford and Stekelenburg is facing up to the possibility of being their third choice goalkeeper at the start of this season.

ED DE GOEY

De Goey spent six seasons Chelsea with mixed fortune.

Joining the Stamford Bridge club in 1997, de Goey was the number one goalkeeper for the first three seasons, in what was a successful time.

During that period, Goey helped Chelsea win the European Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup.

However, midway through the 2000/01 season, he lost the number one spot to Carlo Cudicini and made just 25 appearances during his final three seasons in West London.

He joined Stoke City in 2003 and spent the last three seasons of his career in the Potteries. de

at Westerveld spent two seasons at Liverpool and while he was part of one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history, his credentials on the pitch were often brought into question. Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup and the UEFA Cup during his time at the club, but his frailties saw him eventually replaced by Feyenoord goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek. Team-mate Steven Gerrard wasn’t sold on the Dutchman as he wrote in his autobiography: “I wasn’t completely convinced by our goalkeeper Sander Westerveld... we noticed certain shots or headers went past Sander a bit too easily.

“Sander was fortunate that he was protected by a brilliant defence [Markus Babbel, Sami Hyypia, Stephane Henchoz, Jamie Carragher]. ”

He had two further spells in England with Portsmouth and Everton, but he was used sparingly.

RAIMOND VAN DER GOUW

Van der Gouw was brought to Manchester United in 1996 as cover for Peter Schmeichel.

When called upon, he was dependable, and was United’s number one for large periods of the 1999/00 season, as both Mark Bosnich and Massimo Taibi struggled to fill the void left by Peter Schmeichel’s departure.

He was part of the United squad which won the treble in 1998/99 and he could lay claim to being one of the most successful understudies of all time.
