But shortly af­ter hour, Sun­der­land came close to ex­tend­ing their lead.

McMana­man twisted and turned in­side the area be­fore hit­ting a low shot which McGre­gor pushed away, and when Vaughan col­lected the loose ball his shot on the turn was blocked.

Sun­der­land be­gan to de­fend deeper and deeper as Hull threw ev­ery­thing for­ward in search of an equaliser, with the Black Cats’ de­fend­ing be­com­ing in­creas­ingly des­per­ate.

And the Tigers fi­nally found a way through eight min­utes from time.

Sub Camp­bell teed up Meyler in­side the area and his shot de­flected off Kone, which di­verted it be­tween Ruiter and the right-hand post. Jonny Wil­liams rues a missed op­por­tu­nity
