half-hour when he seized on a mistake by defender Michael Hector inside the penalty area, but this time McGregor came to Hull’s rescue as he blocked the effort with his legs.
At the other end Sunderland keeper Robbin Ruiter was not really tested in the first period, and even when he did make a very good block from Ola Aina midway through the half, the offside flag had been raised against the Hull man in any case.
Hull made a double change at halftime and changed to a flat back four, as they searched for a way back into the game.
They put Sunderland under heavy pressure at the start of the second period, and Ruiter made two excellent saves from Kamil Grosicki – the first from a shot on the turn from just outside the left-hand corner of the penalty area, and the second an even better save to turn a header from the Poland international round the post.
But shortly after hour, Sunderland came close to extending their lead.
McManaman twisted and turned inside the area before hitting a low shot which McGregor pushed away, and when Vaughan collected the loose ball his shot on the turn was blocked.
Sunderland began to defend deeper and deeper as Hull threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, with the Black Cats’ defending becoming increasingly desperate.
And the Tigers finally found a way through eight minutes from time.
Sub Campbell teed up Meyler inside the area and his shot deflected off Kone, which diverted it between Ruiter and the right-hand post. Jonny Williams rues a missed opportunity
