Kyle, left, and Jake with dad Colin and mum Nichola

Looking at Kyle and Jake French now, it’s hard to believe these happy, healthy three-year-olds were once fighting for their lives, and defied the odds to be here today.

The twins were born just 23 weeks into pregnancy. With both weighing less than 1.5lb, their parents were told to “expect the worst”.

Kyle and Jake’s first months of life were spent in hospital, with both their tiny bodies having to undergo gruelling operations. At just 13 days old, Jake needed stomach surgery, and each of the boys needed an operation to close a duct in their heart. The family, from Hebburn spent 18 weeks watching over their children in the Special Care Baby Unit at the RVI.

But now, the bright and bubbly pair are ordinary young lads, who enjoy playing with each other and their friends at nursery.
