Madine’s double lifts Bolton out of the dropzone

-

GARY Madine scored twice as Bolton moved off the foot of the Sky Bet Championship and out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win at home to Barnsley.

Striker Madine gave Wanderers the lead after 20 minutes with a simple finish from Mark Little’s cross, but the Tykes equalised from the penalty spot shortly afterwards.

Tom Bradshaw converted after he had been brought down by Reece Burke, but Bolton scored a spot-kick of their own through Madine to give them a half-time lead.

A superb solo effort from Little - his first goal for the club - gave Phil Parkinson’s men some breathing space and they comfortably held on.

Burton slipped to the bottom following a 1-0 defeat at Derby.

Hull snatched a last-gasp equaliser to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday.

A neat finish from Fraizer Campbell gave the visitors a 21st-minute lead but the Owls levelled with 20 minutes remaining.

Gary Hooper’s strike was initially ruled out for offside but after a discussion with his linesman, referee Mike Jones awarded a goal, with the ball coming off a visiting defender.

Hooper’s second of the game looked to have snatched victory for Wednesday but Michael Dawson’s strike in the fifth minute of stoppage time grabbed the Tigers a point.

Goals from Callum Connolly, Dominic Iorfa, Martyn Waghorn and Bersant Celina earned Ipswich a 4-2 win against Nottingham Forest, who had twice levelled through Kieran Dowell and Tyler Walker.

Sheffield United failed to make up ground on the top two following a 3-1 defeat at Millwall. Brentford eased to a 3-1 win against 10-man Fulham with goals from Sergi Canos, Romaine Sawyers and Ollie Watkins, while QPR held on for 66 minutes with 10 men, only to concede two minutes from time to lose 1-0 at Preston.

Jamie Mackie was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Tom Clarke, with Jordan Hugill poking in a winner having been sent through oneon-one.

Hoops defender Alex Baptiste was sent off after the final whistle to compound their misery.
