Warning over palm oil hazard on beaches

-

WARNING signs have been put up along the Tyneside coast urging dog owners to keep an eye out for palm oil, which can be fatal for pets.

North Tyneside Council and its partner Capita have erected the signs along the promenade between Cullercoats and Whitley Bay advising people to remain vigilant.

Lumps of palm oil were discovered washed up at Whitley Bay earlier this month and there have also been reports of the substance washing up along the Northumberland coast at Newbiggin and Druridge in recent weeks.

The authority says that, although only small amounts of palm oil have been found on North Tyneside beaches, people should get their dogs checked by a vet if they suspect they may have come into contact with it.

A spokesman said: “Owners are advised to contact their vet immediately if they suspect their pet has come into contact with the material, most commonly seen as white waxy blobs with a strong rotten smell.”

Animal charity PDSA says the substance is toxic to dogs and can cause sickness, diarrhoea and death.
