Late strike leaves Whitby scuppered

Sunday Sun - - Football -

GRANTHAM TOWN WHITBY TOWN 3 2 WHITBY Town wasted the opportunity to move to within a point of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division play-off places as they fell to a late defeat at Grantham Town.

The Seasiders dominated the early proceedings and took the lead on 18 minutes thanks to a Dale Hopson penalty.

Adam Gell doubled the lead midway through the first half and it could have been even worse for the hosts had Junior Mondal not hit the post just before the half-hour mark.

That was as good as it got for Chris Hardy’s side as Ryan Oliver headed Grantham back into the game on 33 minutes.

The same player restored parity minutes after the restart as he met a Tom Siddons cross to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

And Siddons turned from provider to goalscorer in injury time as he headed home from close range to give the Gingerbreads all three points.
