SPORT PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN YOUR LIVES – THAT’S WHY THE ECHO AND OUR READERS ARE A GREAT MATCH
It’s not just sport fans who have a passion for what they do or who they support – here at the Sunderland Echo, we have exactly the same.
This is Local Newspaper Week, the annual celebration of the part local newspapers and their partner websites play in keeping their communities reliably informed with the latest news, sport and adverts.
This year’s theme is Making a Difference, highlighting the role your local paper plays in reporting the news that matters to you and your family.
Sport plays a huge role in the everyday lives of so many people, across a wide stretch of the community. Whether it be grassroots level, junior coverage, right up to the professional game, we aim to have it all covered in comprehensive detail.
That’s never been more evident than the last few weeks with our coverage of Sunderland AFC, with more pages and online articles than ever before. We regularly dedicate more than 40 pages a week to the Black Cats, have a flourishing SAFC Facebook page, and online coverage that includes video, polls and live blogs.
Not that it’s all support, support, support. The Echo has constantly balanced that with critical analysis through our team of writers and columnists. We don’t just provide news and pictures, there is also comment and to hold people in senior positions to account.
With our own talented team of writers including Phil Smith and Richard Mennear, along with some of the best SAFC columnists in Gary Rowell, David Preece and Tony Gillan, our coverage is second to none.
It’s not just the big boys we cover, though. Non-league football clubs have benefitted from our coverage, with Washington a good example. When their future was thrown into doubt, we highlighted their plight in a bid to get people helping the club.
Washington chairman Derek Armstrong immediately got in touch, thanking us for our coverage. He said: “Thanks for the Echo paper and online article. We’re already getting some offers of help.”
Then there is our coverage of women’s sport, athletics, grassroots sport like bowls and darts and junior football, with our special supplement on a Saturday dedicated to the young stars in the Russell Foster League.
The Echo is the only newspaper regularly giving these Sunderland sports the coverage they deserve.
