EPPLETON’S CUP JOY
GREAT TIMES FOR CRICKET IN HETTON AREA, WITH THREE CUP FINAL TRIUMPHS
Eppleton Under-13s landed the David Stephinson Trophy by the narrowest possible margin, pipping neighbours Hetton Lyons in the final at Sacriston.
Both teams scored 93-9 from their 20 overs, but the Church Road side won by one run on countback - Eppleton scoring 92 from 19 overs compared to Lyons’ 91.
Eppleton won the toss and inserted Lyons, and got straight on the scoreboard as Taylor Vout was dismissed early by Josh Hutchinson.
Tight bowling reduced Lyons to 50-5, but James Hutchinson got his side back in the game with an unbeaten 21 from 36 balls, backed by Ella Tomys (12). Edward Brown (24) and Jye Richardson (2-11) struck for Eppleton.
Eppleton’s reply started brightly, with Jake Pratt making 10, backed by 19 from Brown. Josh Hutchinson then led the way with 32, including four fours and two sixes.
Once man of the match Hutchinson retired, Lyons were back in the game, taking five wickets for five runs, leaving Eppleton 92-8.
Luke Johnson was the saviour at the end with seven not out from 18 balls as Eppleton closed on 93-9.
Jack Hedley took 3-2, Jack Scott 3-16 and Luke Husband 2-17.
