Backspin stun the Bandits to take over at the summit
The Sunderland League’s Third Division fixtures threw up an intriguing top-of-the table clash as Backspin B squared up to East Boldon Bandits.
Fittingly, the match was a tight contest with five-enders aplenty. The visitors grabbed the initiative when Ryan Campbell beat John Cook 117, and Jeff Hope clawed his way back from a 2-0 deficit to pip Alex Nicholl 12-10.
However, this was to be no smash-and-grab raid for the Bandits as Backspin’s Adam Butler and Nicholl steadied home nerves with a crucial 11-8 doubles success.
Another last-ditch win by Hope, 13-11 over Cook, tied up the score at 4-4. Nicholl then beat Adam Allsopp to set the stage for a thrilling final game between Adam Butler and Campbell.
Butler found himself 2-0 down, but rallied as he took the deciding end 11-9 and the result for Backspin.
The 6-4 score-line looked increasingly valuable for these promotion contenders as the nearest chasing team, Lanchester Eagles, failed to close the gap after suffering a narrow defeat at Redby B.
Istvan and Bence Franko combined to deliver Redby’s knockout punch.
St Gabriel’s E travelled to Brandon Devils and Derek Buller pulled off an 11-4 fifthend win over Ian Cumpson.
Paul Lupton redressed the balance by edging an 11-9 decision over Jonathan Haynes, but a triple-strike from Gabriel’s Joseph Miller proved pivotal as the Saints prevailed 6-4 over the Devils.
Elsewhere, Lanchester Eagles B took the sting out of the visiting Sacriston Scorpions in a 9-1 victory.
In Division One, Old England Nomads find themselves rooted to the bottom after going down 6-4 at home to West CA.
The West victory was ensured by an Adam Webster hat-trick, Webster proving too strong for Brian Bateman and Colin Robson. Both Nomads scored sets against Tom Fowle and Ken Lee.
Another fiercely-contested affair saw Backspin A see off Mount CA, 7-3.
Dan Dodds and Jamie Dent put Backspin in the driving seat, but David McAllister went down in five to David Pringle.
McAllister managed to sneak an 11-9 last-end win over Rod Roberts, but defeat to Bailey Pye saw Mount grasp another set.
The home team eventually took the spoils as Dent beat Pye and Pringle in four ends, while Dodds’ hat-trick included coming back from 2-0 down to defeat Pringle 12-10.
Two sets of teams could not be separated in Division Two, as bottom-of-the table Silksworth IM B held Sacriston Bombers to a draw.
Silksworth’s Jeff McKenna was in dominant form and his haul included the toppling of Daniel Hutchinson and Nigel Coe.
At Unionist Club B, doubles from Ray Purves and Jamie Westwater were not enough against West B as both players found Mike Lyons too hot to handle.
Lyons’ treble was supported by sets from Linda Spensley and Kishore Sridharan as the match ended 5-5.
