New decade would decide town’s fate

-

The future of Peterlee could hinge on the achievements of the decade, probably the most important ten years in its history. Success could bring importance to the New Town, not only in the North East but nationally and even in Europe.

Mr AV Williams, general manager of the Peterlee Development Corporation, said: “My thoughts are very clear. Certainly we will be established as an important scientific and technological base – this is the work of the decade.” He added: “Flexibility is the key to success in the building of the scientific and research base and all the land the Corporation could possibly want and all the physical environment is available to them.

“Success also depends on the role of the universities and polytechnics. The interest is there.”
