Dancers flitted across the pond to perform in city

Sunderland Echo - - The Tall Ships Races 2018 are here -

Dancers from across the pond made a splash in Sunderland as they delivered a special performance as part of the Tall Ships Races spectacle.

A troupe of dancers from American capital Washington DC came to Wearside to stage a series of shows on board Dutch vessel Oosterschelde.

They joined six dance students from Sunderland College to perform the piece, called Of Earth, the Sky and the Boundless Sea, on the quayside and then below deck.

Three professional dancers from DC-based Company E were part of the show, which was devised by co-artistic director Paul Emerson.

They performed to original songs, composed and performed by Barry Hyde, the former vocalist of Sunderland punk band The Futureheads, and four professional folk singers.

Mr Emerson said: “It was phenomenal to be part of this amazing event.”
